A census (or head count) of everyone in England & Wales every ten years on a specific day since 1801. The aim of the census is to obtain information about the population as a whole.
The 1841 census, undertaken on the night of the 6th June, was the first census to list the names of every individual. The details also include occupations, sex and age. However, the ages of the individuals are approximate. The enumerator was instructed to round down the ages of all those individuals over the age of 15 to the nearest five years. For example, a person aged 29 would be recorded as 25.
Although this census does not give the individual’s place of birth, it does confirm whether or not the person was born in the same county as the return (in this case, Norfolk). Accordingly, the last column in the tables below will confirm whether or not the individual was born in Norfolk.
Great Ellingham
The reference for this census is HO107/781/8 and the original census returns are held by the National Archives, Kew. However, images can be viewed at the Norfolk Heritage Centre, The Forum, Norwich NR2 1AW. Images can also be viewed online using the family history subscription sites, as well as freely, via the FamilySearch website.
This is my transcription of the 1841 census for Great Ellingham. It shows the people in their individual households in the village on the 6th June, 1841.
Very few of the pages give the name of the road or street, although some properties, such as The Crown Inn, the Chequers Inn, The Hall, Bury Hall, Tann Farm and Port Wood are identified.
Some pages of the census are difficult to read. Further it can also be difficult to be certain where one household finishes and another household begins.
This is for information and anyone researching their family history should check the original pages themselves.
The census is in two parts:
Enumeration District 8 "All that part of the Parish of Great Ellingham lying on the South West side of the road leading from Attleborough to Watton"
