Mrs Lydia Barnard – Grocer & Draper

Posted on July 26, 2019October 9, 2023 by Heather Etteridge

Great Ellingham had at least one grocer and draper’s shop in 1715.

A notice for the letting of a grocer and draper’s shop situate ‘near the Church’ appeared on page 3 of the Norfolk Chronicle of Saturday 3 September 1785.

The shop had been a grocer and draper’s establishment for upwards of 70 years.

The letting came about with the death of Mrs Lydia Barnard. Her widower, Samuel, was mentioned in the notice.

It is possible that the building in the photograph (later Ye Olde Thatche Shoppe) is the grocer and draper’s shop referred to in the notice.
