Court Appearance
Mary Ann Mace, described as an Innkeeper’s wife of Great Ellingham, appeared at the Petty Sessions at East Harling on July 30th, 1883. The Defendant was summoned to Court on the information of labourer, John Fox (also of Great Ellingham), for assaulting his daughter, Ellen Fox.
Mary Ann pleaded guilty and was adjudged to pay a penalty and costs amounting to £2 10s 6d.
The Norfolk Pubs Website confirms that John Mace was the licensee of The Queens Head Public House in Great Ellingham from 1879-1892.
1881 census – John & Mary Mace
The 1881 census shows 40 year old John Mace described as an innkeeper, farrier and farmer, at the Queens Head with his wife Mary Ann (aged 30), son Thomas aged 4 and three year old daughter “Bertie”. John Mace was born in Old Buckenham, Mary Ann and Thomas born in Rockland St Peter and Bertie in Great Ellingham.
The Great Ellingham Parish Registers reveal a baptism entry for two children of John and Mary Ann Mace on July 14th, 1884: Welcome William (born on 27 May 1884) and Mary (born 20th November, 1883).
John and Mary buried their son Welcome William in the Churchyard at St James on January 27th, 1885.
1881 census – John & Sarah Ann Fox
The same census (1881) finds 49 year old John Fox, a farm labourer, with his wife Sarah Ann and children James (23), William (19) and 15 year old Ellen at “The Burying Ground” Great Ellingham. I am wondering whether the Fox family were living near to the Baptist Burial Ground which lies to the south-west of the Queens Head. Ellen Fox would have been around the age of 17 years when the incident occurred.
1891 – The Mace Family
John Mace with his wife and children are still at the Queens Head Public House at the time of the 1891 census. John Mace is now described in the census as a Veterinary. The couple have children: Thomas (15), Bertha (14), Mary (7), Florence May (1) and three month old William.
By 1901, John and Mary Ann Mace had moved to Cromer. The 1901 census shows the couple with children May and William living in the seaside town.
