The Norfolk News of 29th August 1874, reported the death at Great Ellingham of 59 year old George Newby. The report stated that George Newby was ‘greatly respected and deeply lamented by his family and friends’.
I have not found a corresponding burial for George Newby in the Parish Registers for the Church of St James.
1871 census
The census of 1871 (which was taken just three years before he died), shows George Newby with wife Ann and family in Long Street, Great Ellingham. George farmed 41 acres and employed one boy. The census also confirms that George was born around 1815 in Weston, Suffolk. Ann Newby was born in nearby Attleborough.
George & Ann Newby’s Family
A marriage between George Newby and Ann Bird was registered in the Guiltcross District in the June Quarter of 1843.
Their first child Eleanor was born the following year in Bridgham (Norfolk). Two further children were born in Bridgham – Harry in 1847 and Martha Ann in 1849.
By 1851, the Newby family had moved to Fen Street in Redgrave, Suffolk. George’s was working as a farm steward. Two further children were born in Redgrave – Eliza in 1851 and George in 1854.
The Newby family came to Great Ellingham before 1857, when their last child David was born in the village. I have not found a baptism for David in the Parish Registers for the Church of St James. It is possible that David was baptised elsewhere, or not at all.
The 1861 census captures the family living in Long Street. Visitor 70 year old widower John Bird is with the family. I suspect that John Bird is Ann’s father.
The Newby Children
David
Youngest son David died aged 8 years in 1865. Again I have not found a corresponding burial for David in the Burial Register for the Church of St James.
Eleanor, Martha Ann & Harry
Three children of George and Ann Newby married in 1870.
Eldest daughter, Eleanor, married carpenter George Barnard from Attleborough in the Parish Church of St James on October 28th, 1870. Eleanor’s name in the register was stated as “Ellen”.
Just a few weeks (or months) prior to her sister’s marriage, Martha Ann had married William Woodrow. A marriage between these two parties was registered in the Wayland District during July to September 1870.
Harry Newby (as Henry Newby) married Charlotte Mary Calver in St Giles’ Parish Church, Norwich on October 7th, 1870. Later widowed, Harry married widow Sophia Thurston in the Parish Church of Rockland St Peter on Christmas Day, 1895.
Eliza & George
Eliza Newby married Great Ellingham born Thomas Walter Houchen (Houchin) in Great Ellingham Parish Church on May 10th, 1877.
Finally, George and Ann’s Newby’s son George married Martha Eagling at the Church of St James on December 11th, 1890.

After her husband’s death in 1874, Ann Newby continued to live in Long Street. The 1891 census finds Ann Newby with her son and daughter-in-law, George and Martha Newby, in Long Street. George is working as a corn threshing machinist.
A death for an Ann Newby aged 82 is registered between April, May and June in the Wayland District of 1896. Great Ellingham lies within the Wayland District at this time.
I have not found a corresponding burial in the churchyard of St James for Ann Newby.
